Castle of the dukes of Brabant

The living proof that history never fades

Discover the former country residence of the Dukes of Brabant

The Castle of the Dukes of Brabant is living proof that history never fades. Rising proudly above Turnhout since the 13th century, this remarkable building once served as the country residence of the Dukes of Brabant and now houses the Court of First Instance.

A castle marked by time

Every stone of the castle tells a story. During the Eighty Years’ War, it was battered by more than a hundred cannonballs. Centuries later, the building fell into decline and was even threatened with demolition. But fate took a turn: the Province saved the castle and commissioned architect Jules Taeymans to restore it to its original appearance. Since 1936, it has been listed as a protected monument — a proud witness to the passage of time.

Step into the past

Set foot inside the castle and step into another world. The inner courtyard radiates tranquillity, while the halls whisper tales of power, justice and history. Wander through the corridors, admire the grand courtroom, and let your gaze drift across the wall paintings by Karel Boom — a vivid portrayal of the judicial system in the time of Mary of Hungary.
